What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our body, mainly in the skin, connective tissue, tendons and eyes.

Its main function is to retain water to keep tissues well lubricated and hydrated. In the field of aesthetic medicine, hyaluronic acid is used as a dermal filler to add volume, smooth wrinkles and improve facial contour.

Natural look

We will use fillers formulated with more cross-linking (for understanding, we will use a denser hyaluronic acid) to provide structure to the lip and thus increase volume, providing a fuller and more fleshy appearance. Fuller and more defined lips, ideal for people with thin lips who want a noticeable but natural increase.

Contour

Fillers designed to enhance and define the lip contour without adding much volume. Lips with a more defined edge and a more sculpted shape, perfect for those who want a subtle enhancement of the lip contour.

Hydration ("gloss")

These fillers focus on improving the hydration and softness of the lips, providing a healthier and more youthful appearance. More hydrated and softer lips, with a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Correction of asymmetries

Barcode correction

The “barcode” is a term commonly used to describe fine lines and vertical wrinkles that appear around the lips, especially on the upper lip. These wrinkles can be caused by natural aging, sun exposure, smoking, and loss of collagen in the skin. Fortunately, hyaluronic acid offers an effective solution to smooth out these wrinkles and rejuvenate the perioral area, as it integrates well with the skin tissues, providing a natural and smooth result. We will usually combine it with chemical peeling sessions or Morpheus8, which are treatments with a permanent rejuvenating effect.

What does the treatment consist of?

Treatment begins with a detailed consultation, during which the patient’s facial features are assessed, his or her expectations are discussed, and a personalized treatment plan is designed. Dr. Marc Illa will explain the procedure, the types of fillers available and the expected results, as well as possible risks, alternatives, and side effects.

Preparation: Before the injection, depending on each case, an anesthetic cream is applied on the lips to minimize any discomfort. In some cases, local anesthesia may be used. The lips and surrounding area are cleaned and disinfected to prevent infection.
Hyaluronic acid injection:A fine needle or cannula is used to inject hyaluronic acid into specific areas of the lips. The technique and amount of product used are adjusted according to the patient’s needs and desires. After the injection, the doctor may gently massage the lips to ensure even distribution of the product and a natural result.
Post-treatment:Detailed aftercare instructions are provided, which may include avoiding sun exposure, not putting pressure on the lips, and keeping them moisturized. It is normal to experience some swelling and redness, which usually disappear within a few days. Applying cold compresses may help reduce these reactions.

Expected results

The results of hyaluronic acid treatments are visible immediately, although initial swelling may make these areas appear more voluminous than expected.

As the swelling subsides over a few days, the infiltrated areas take on their final, more natural and balanced appearance.

Results typically last between 6 and 12 months, depending on the type of hyaluronic acid used and the patient’s individual metabolism.
